We Interrupt This Blog Post...

Workout: rest

Jogging Jeano elves (my fingers) are working furiously to update this janky blog template to make it easier to comment (thanks for the reminder, Holly!), so bear with me. After approximately thirty seconds of dedicated research (dedicated research = typing "free simple blogger template" into google and clicking on the first link), I decided to dive right in and try something that looked nice.

I clicked a few times and everything looked great until I noticed:

Category 1? Featured? Category 2? CHILD1, CHILD 2, CHILD 3?! Slow down there, Blogger. Jeano's gotta go on a date before she can have three kids and give them their own dedicated blog tab.

I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do with these things, so I'm going to keep investigating. "Investigating" definitely won't include "reading directions on how to edit downloaded blogger templates" because it should be user-friendly enough that I can click right on it and type things. I'm just going to click until I get something that works without me doing anything to it.

I suppose I'm breaking blogger code revealing to y'all the secrets of the trade, but I figured you would be just thrilled to participate in this historic moment (me trying to learn internet things). And, I wanted to explain why things are going to get weird up in here.

[UPDATED TO ADD: I'm template-ed out. No more, I say. We're sticking with what (I really hope) works]

  1. Hahaha! I have no clue about blogger stuff, so I appreciate you sharing your investigative journey ;)

    1. Thanks! I figured all the blogger amateurs out there would learn a lot from my super impressive blog design skills... like, "go somewhere else to learn about blogs because Jean doesn't know what she's doing."

  2. Hahaha! There are several blog-related things that are called "Child", actually. [File under "things I learned when starting RWH blog".] In this case, it looks like "Sub-Category" would've done just fine, though. Doh!

My (limited) experience with Blogger says that you have to pick the right template for your format, and if you don't, things will disappear (or you'll have a bunch of children you know nothing about). But I only spent a few months on Blogger, and at that time, content was more important than style. Well, and only my family was reading....

Be persistent - this blogging stuff takes time (and I think it's more pesky/tricky than the running stuff, personally). Good luck. And I'll be sure to annoyingly point out any other weirdnesses that arise.

    1. Please do! I ended up deleting code things left and right so it is VERY possible that things will disappear/not work. I seem to have used up all my patience for now; it's going to be a while before I'll be willing to deal with that again.

  3. I'm loving the new look! The header photo is amazing and totally eye catching. How the heck did you get up there?! Maybe your "children" can be different pairs of running shoes, or perhaps some plants if you're looking for a little more commitment. Good luck playing around with your new template, but it looks like you've done a great job of figuring things out. :)

    1. Thanks! It's actually kind of deceiving-I'm standing on a sort of cliff's edge, so it's not nearly as steep on the side I came up.

I would have attempted to fill those sub-categories, but it wasn't clear to me how to fill them with content so that was a no-go. Maybe someday.

  4. Haha, looks great! I just did the same thing a few days ago. This crap is in geek boy language so I had to keep asking my husband for help. When he'd ask what I wanted, I just kept saying "you know...like a nice blog. You know, pretty and stuff." So helpful. I did learn that these symbols <> are very important in code writing.

    1. Dammit, I need me a husband so someone can do all this shit for me. And, of course, love and all that. But really to help me with my blog.

  5. So frustrating, right?!?! I've been trying to switch my blog over to my own domain (mountainsandmiles.com), but I can't figure out how. I am NOT tech savvy and it's really not helping me out right now. I gave up a few weeks ago, ha.

    1. Well hey, at least you understand what "moving to your own domain" means! I kid, but only a little. That would be totally beyond me.

  6. Yikes. Good luck. One question though: what are you going to have as your sub-heading once you move to OR? Hehe.

    1. Ahaha, good question! I didn't bother to change the "content" of my homepage with this redesign; that's a task for some other day. It'll probably just end up saying something reeeeally interesting like "I live in Oregon now."

  7. Yea, I have no idea how to work blogs---hence why my layout has never changed--not a once.! ha!

    1. It's probably better that way. I wouldn't have changed if it hadn't come to my attention that accessing the comments didn't work half the time.
